VO2max and aerobic scope in mammals

چکیده
Debate on the mechanism(s) responsible for the scaling of metabolic rate with body size in mammals has focused on why the maximum metabolic rate ( _ VO2max) appears to scale more steeply with body size than the basal metabolic rate (BMR). Consequently, metabolic scope, defined as _ VO2max /BMR, systematically increases with body size. These observations have led some to suggest that _ VO2max and BMR are controlled by fundamentally different processes, and to discount the generality of models that predict a single power-law scaling exponent for the size dependence of the metabolic rate. We present a model that predicts a steeper size dependence for _ VO2max than BMR based on the observation that changes in muscle temperature from rest to maximal activity are greater in larger mammals. Empirical data support the model’s prediction. This model thus provides a potential theoretical and mechanistic link between BMR and _ VO2max.

متن کاملAerobic characteristics of red kangaroo skeletal muscles: is a high aerobic capacity matched by muscle mitochondrial and capillary morphology as in placental mammals?
Marsupials and placentals together comprise the Theria, the advanced mammals, but they have had long independent evolutionary histories, with the last common ancestor occurring more than 125 million years ago. Although in the past the marsupials were considered to be metabolically 'primitive', the red kangaroo Macropus rufus has been reported to have an aerobic capacity (VO2max) comparable to t...
متن کاملPatterns of fuel use during locomotion in mammals revisited: the importance of aerobic scope.
Fuel selection patterns during exercise are thought to be conserved among sea-level native mammals when intensity is expressed relative to maximum aerobic capacity (V̇(O₂,max)). However, this claim is based on data from only a few species larger than rats, and has never been tested statistically. Thus, we investigated fuel use in a small mammal (Mus musculus, CD-1 strain), and combined these dat...
متن کاملDevelop of native aerobic power prediction equation by the 6-minute walk test in healthy child
Aerobic power (VO2max) is an important indicator of the health and physical fitness. Executive problems in direct VO2max measurement has led to developing sub-maximal aerobic power prediction equations. The purpose of present study was to develop native aerobic power prediction equation based on 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) and body composition indices in children. In 192 healthy children (8 to 12...
متن کاملHeart mitochondrial properties and aerobic capacity are similarly related in a mammal and a reptile.
The heart mitochondrial properties and the aerobic capacity (VO2max) of the rat (Sprague-Dawley breed) and the Cuban iguana (Cyclura nubila) were used to evaluate the relationship between the oxidative capacity of the heart and the maximum oxygen delivery rate. Both species are active at body temperatures of 37-39 degrees C, have similar heart mitochondrial volumes [Vmt; 0.43 +/- 0.02 ml (S.E.M...
